Darwin's theory is based on key facts and inferences drawn from them, which biologist Ernst Mayr summarized as follows:
Every species is fertile enough that if all offspring survived to reproduce the population would grow. (fact)
Despite periodic fluctuations, populations remain roughly the same size. (fact)
Resources such as food are limited and are relatively stable over time. (fact)
A struggle for survival ensues. (inference)
Individuals in a population vary significantly from one another. (fact)
Much of this variation is inheritable. (fact)
Individuals less suited to the environment are less likely to survive and less likely to reproduce. (inference)
Individuals more suited to the environment are more likely to survive and more likely to reproduce. (inference)
They will leave their inheritable traits to future generations. (inference)
This produces the process of natural selection. (inference)
This slowly effected process results in populations changing to adapt to their environments. (inference)
Ultimately, these variations accumulate over time to form new species. (inference)
“A man who dares to waste one hour of time has not discovered the value of life.”
“Animals, whom we have made our slaves, we do not like to consider our equal.”
Who is your favorite writer, what is your favorite book ?
“I have tried lately to read Shakespeare, and found it so intolerably dull that it nauseated me.”
Where do you find your inspiration ?
“I was a young man with uninformed ideas. I threw out queries, suggestions, wondering all the time over everything; and to my astonishment the ideas took like wildfire. People made a religion of them.”
What is your "wild-side" ?
“We must, however, acknowledge, as it seems to me, that man with all his noble qualities... still bears in his bodily frame the indelible stamp of his lowly origin.”
In your opinion, what is the worst human trait ?
“If the misery of the poor be caused not by the laws of nature, but by our institutions, great is our sin.”
What animal would you choose to be reincarnated as ?
“An American Monkey after getting drunk on Brandy would never touch it again, and thus is much wiser than most men”
