Paris Whitney Hilton is born in New York to the Hilton family. Being the eldest of four children, sibling to Nicky Hitlon, Barron Hilton II and Conad Hilton III, she is heir apparent to the vast Hilton Hotel and real estate dynasty. She is the daughter of Richard and Kathy Hilton (Richards). She is related to the child stars Kim Richards and Kyle Richards and also Zsa Zsa Gabor and Elizabeth Taylor. Her great-grandparents were Hilton Hotels' founder Conrad Hilton and his first wife, Mary Barron. When Conrad Hilton died in 1979, he left nothing in his will to his children or other descendants. His son Barron Hilton contested this decision in court in 1988 and won. The value of Paris's inheritance has been variously estimated at between $30 and $50 million.

Hilton moves between several exclusive homes in her youth, including a suite in the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in Manhattan, Beverly Hills, and the Hamptons. She spends her freshman year of high school in Rancho Mirage, California at the Marywood-Palm Valley School. Her sophomore and junior years of high school are spent briefly attending the Canterbury Boarding School, in Connecticut, and then transferring to the ultra-exclusive Dwight School in New York. She drops out of school, but eventually earns a GED through home-schooling.

Hilton begins modelling as a child, appearing first in charity events. At 19, she signs with Donald Trump's modelling agency, 'T Management'. Hilton works with modelling agencies in New York and in London. She appears in many different advertising campaigns, including Iceberg Vodka, GUESS, Tommy Hilfiger, Christian Dior, and Marciano.
The nineteen year old starts to develop a reputation as a socialite, being identified in 'The Guardian' as "New York's leading It Girl" whose fame is beginning to "extend beyond the New York tabloids".
Living the glitzy socialite life from a relatively early age, attending exclusive parties and being covered by the gossip press, Hilton seems to be addicted to obtaining celebrity status, which is perhaps developed by the example of her mother, Kathy Richards, who had a brief acting career, mainly on TV.

Hilton begins a well-financed campaign to put herself in the public eye, on screen, on television and in music. This effort includes a large amount of physical alteration. She dyes her hair blond and adopts blue tinted contact lenses. She reputedly also undergoes plastic surgery. However, money can not alter the physical attribute she most dislikes about herself: her size 11 feet.
She appears in cameo roles in films such as 'Zoolander' (2001) and Nine Lives (2002). She guest-stars in TV shows such as 'The O.C.' (2003) and 'George Lopez' (2002).

It features their rural exploits, which include spending time with a family on their farm in Altus, Arkansas. It becomes a success for the Fox Broadcasting Company.
The first season is followed by two more on Fox. The network then cancels the show after a falling out between Hilton and Richie. The show is consequently picked up by E! Entertainment Television for a fourth season, and another season is scheduled to premiere in May 2007.

Some sceptics believe that the endless celebrity fallouts surrounding Hilton are, in fact, publicity stunts,to keep her in the press. It is even argued that the leak on the internet of the infamous home-made sex video of Hilton with her boyfriend Rick Salomon, is part of this campaign as well. If it is, it works. The leak a week before the premiere of 'The Simple Life' attracts worldwide publicity in late 2003. It makes Hilton a celebrity overnight, The video marketed as'1 Night in Paris' (2004) makes Hilton a celebrity.

In September 2004, Hilton releases an autobiographical book, 'Confessions of an Heiress: A Tongue-in-Chic Peek Behind the Pose', co-written by Merle Ginsberg. Hilton reportedly receives a $100,000 in advance payment for this book. The media criticise the writing as childish. Nonetheless, the book becomes a New York Times bestseller. Hilton follows it with a designer diary, also written with Ginsberg, called 'Your Heiress Diary: Confess It All To Me' published on 11th November 2005.
In 2004, Hilton is involved in the creation of a perfume line by Parlux Fragrances. Originally set to be a small release, demand is high and necessitates a wider release before Christmas of 2004. The launch is followed by a 47% increase in sales for Parlux, which is predominantly due to sales of the Hilton-branded perfume. After the success of Hilton's perfume, Parlux Fragrances releases several more perfumes with Hilton's name, including fragrances lines for men.

Hilton strongly denies the sceptics' claims about the video '1 Night in Paris' (2004) and states that she is "embarrassed" and "humiliated" by the publicity brought by it. As if to prove this, Hilton sues Salomon over the release of the tape, but settles out of court in July 2005. Hilton is reportedly awarded up to $400,000 and plans to donate a percentage to charity, although in a 2006 interview with GQ magazine she denies receiving the money from the sale of the video.

'Turn It Up' and 'Nothing in This World' follow as worldwide singles. Hilton's self-titled debut album, 'Paris', which she started working on in 2004 is finally released on 22nd August 2006. Hilton collaborates with Fat Joe and Jadakiss on the song 'Fighting Over Me'. Although the album reaches number six on the Billboard 200 for a week, the number of sales is low.
In August 2006, it is revealed that artists Banksy and Danger Mouse replaced 500 copies of Hilton's debut album in various UK record stores with their own parody remixes and cover art. These include topless photos of Hilton with slogans such as "Every CD you buy puts me even further out of your league".

Los Angeles Prosecutors decide that these actions, along with the failure to participate in a court-ordered alcohol education programme constitute a violation of the terms of her probation.
| 4 May 2007 |

Hilton is sentenced by Judge Michael T. Sauer to 45 days in jail for violating her probation. Initially, Hilton plans to appeal the sentence, and starts an online petition asking for a pardon from California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. The same day as Paris as released from prison, Judge Michael Sauer orders her to reappear back in his court the following morning. At the hearing he declines to be briefed by Hilton's attorney in private chambers on the nature of her medical condition and sends her back to jail to serve out her original sentence. However, concern about Hilton's condition leads to her being moved to the medical wing of the Twin Towers Correctional Facility in Los Angeles.

In a phone interview from jail, Hilton tells Barbara Walters (from the Associated Press) that God had given her a second chance, and that she would no longer "act dumb".

In a poll conducted by the Associated Press and AOL, Hilton is voted the second "Worst Celebrity Role Model of 2006", behind Britney Spears.
